The Euphonix System 5 was launched at AES in 1999 as the company's first fully digital mixing console, replacing the earlier CS range of digitally-controlled analog systems. The CM402T center section was part of the modular control surface design that included CM401T master sections and CM408 channel strips.
The System 5 introduced Euphonix's distinctive 'Phat' knob design—large rotary encoders with LEDs integrated into the top to indicate position—though around 2006 these were updated to more traditional, smaller-diameter touch-sensitive knobs for improved ergonomics.
Euphonix was acquired by Avid in April 2010. The System 5 line was eventually discontinued in 2016 following Avid's launch of the S6 console, though the platform remained in use in professional film and television post-production facilities worldwide.
