The E-MU Emax I was E-MU Systems' first affordable sampler, released in 1986 as a direct competitor to the Ensoniq Mirage and Casio FZ-1. Built around a 12-bit, 27.7 kHz sampler with a legendary 4-pole Curtis CEM 3389 analog lowpass filter, the Emax delivered a warm, characterful sound that digital samplers of the era could not match. It offered 8-voice polyphony, real-time filter control, and a comprehensive synthesis section including LFO, envelope generators, and crossfade looping. Available in 61-key keyboard and rack-mount configurations, with 512K or 2MB RAM options, the Emax established E-MU's reputation for professional-quality sampling at accessible price points.

The Emax was E-mu Systems' bid to put real sampling within reach of working musicians. Launched in 1986 at $2,995 (a rack version followed at $2,695), it distilled the architecture of the flagship Emulator II into a more affordable, more reliable instrument — and in doing so became one of the defining samplers of the late 1980s.

From the Emulator to a "people's sampler" E-mu Systems, founded by Dave Rossum and Scott Wedge, had effectively created the affordable sampling market with the original Emulator (1981) and refined it with the Emulator II (1984). But by the mid-80s the field was crowding fast — the Akai S612 and Sequential Prophet 2000 were driving prices down. The Emax was E-mu's answer: keep the musical character of the Emulator II, cut the cost, and modernize the hardware. Where the Emulator stored sounds on antiquated 5¼″ floppies, the Emax used 3½″ disks and more dependable components, making it far more roadworthy.

Inside the Emax: 12-bit digital, analog soul On paper the Emax is a 12-bit, 8-voice digital sampler with a 42 kHz maximum sample rate and 512 KB of sample memory. What that spec sheet hides is the reason it still sounds the way it does: the Emax is digital at the front and analog at the back. Each of its eight voices is a complete analog signal path. The 12-bit sample is reconstructed by an AM6012 multiplying DAC and then passed through an SSM2047 — a combined voltage-controlled filter and amplifier — configured as a 4-pole, 24 dB/octave low-pass filter, exactly like the voice card of an analog polysynth. That architecture is the whole story. A modest 12-bit recording, shaped by eight real analog filters with dedicated filter and amplifier AHDSR envelopes, an LFO, and real-time modulation from the wheels, keyboard pressure, and pedal, comes out warm, punchy, and unmistakably musical — a "grit" that purely digital samplers of the era couldn't match. The 61-note keyboard was velocity- and pressure-sensitive, and the instrument added an arpeggiator, a 16-track real-time sequencer, and full MIDI control (see the MIDI implementation chart on this page).

The variant family - Emax (keyboard / rack) — the original 1986 instruments. - Emax HD — added an internal 20 MB hard drive, trading floppy-swapping for instant library access. - Emax SE — added an additive-synthesis engine, letting players build sounds from scratch rather than only sampling them. - Emax Plus — added external SCSI for hard drives and CD-ROMs.

The original Emax was discontinued in 1989 and succeeded by the 16-bit Emax II — but the line, and its sound, had already been written into a run of landmark records.

The records it made The Emax's brighter, higher-fidelity character made it a favorite of the sampling-as-composition generation:

Nine Inch Nails — Pretty Hate Machine (1989). An Emax SE was Trent Reznor's first real sampler; by his own account, "I got an Emax and that was Pretty Hate Machine." Disliking the factory sounds, he built the album from snippets nicked off his own records (Front 242, Scritti Politti and others) — every drum sound on the album reportedly came from an outside sample. The screeching line at the end of "Terrible Lie" started life as a woodblock run through a distortion pedal, sampled into the Emax, and pitched down. Reznor preferred the Emax to his Emulator for its cleaner, brighter sound.

Depeche Mode. Alan Wilder toured with Emax (and later Emax II) samplers from 1987 until he left the band in 1995, through the Music for the Masses and Devotional eras; his Emax sample banks are still traded among fans today.

Beastie Boys — Paul's Boutique (1989). Another cornerstone of late-80s sample culture built with help from the Emax.

Legacy The Emax proved that affordable digital sampling didn't have to sound sterile. By marrying 12-bit conversion to a genuine analog per-voice back end, E-mu gave a generation of producers an instrument with character to spare — a sound that artists still chase, recreate, and sample to this day.
