E-MU Systems
E-mu Systems was founded in 1971 in Santa Cruz, California by Dave Rossum and Scott Wedge. A pioneer of digital sampling, E-mu built the landmark Emulator (1981) — among the first affordable sampling keyboards — followed by the Emax, the SP-1200 (a cornerstone of hip-hop production), and the long-running Proteus sound-module line. Creative Technology acquired the company in 1993 and merged it with fellow subsidiary Ensoniq in 1998. E-mu discontinued its hardware instruments in 2002, continuing afterward with software samplers (Emulator X, Proteus X) and professional audio interfaces.
