Origins
Following the limited commercial success of their flagship ARP 2500 modular system, ARP Instruments sought to create a more accessible instrument that retained professional capabilities. The ARP 2600, introduced in 1971 under the direction of Alan Pearlman and engineer Dennis Colin, answered this need as a semi-modular synthesizer that required no patch cables for basic operation while offering extensive routing flexibility for advanced users. Priced at $2,600, it represented a more practical alternative to both fully modular systems and limited monophonic keyboards.
Design & Technology
The 2600's semi-modular architecture pre-wired essential connections internally while providing patch points for customization. Three voltage-controlled oscillators offered sawtooth, square, and pulse waveforms with synchronization capabilities. The filter section evolved through production: early units used the 4012, a design similar to Moog's transistor ladder filter that became the subject of patent litigation, later replaced by ARP's own 4072 design.
The system included a 24dB/octave low-pass filter, voltage-controlled amplifier, ring modulator, sample and hold, white and pink noise generators, microphone preamplifier, spring reverb, two envelope generators, and a four-octave keyboard. Built-in speakers and a carrying case in the 2600P model emphasized portability for educational markets.
Production History
ARP produced multiple variants from 1971 to 1981. The earliest 'Blue Meanie' or 'Blue Marvin' units (early 1971) featured distinctive blue and gray aluminum cases assembled in Newton Highlands, Massachusetts—only a handful were made. The 'Gray Meanie' followed with a gray panel, limited to approximately 35 units.
The 2600P introduced a suitcase-style vinyl-covered wood enclosure for portability. Version iterations brought improved VCO sub-modules (4011/4017 to 4027 to 2037-1), replacement of problematic Teledyne op-amps, and the Model 3620 duophonic keyboard with integrated LFO. The 2601 series adopted orange-over-black styling aligned with other ARP products and the 4072 filter.
Notable Users
The 2600's influence permeated popular culture. Sound designer Ben Burtt used it to create R2-D2's voice in Star Wars, combining synthesized tones with his own vocalizations. He also generated the Ark of the Covenant sounds in Raiders of the Lost Ark.
Musicians embraced the 2600 across genres. Edgar Winter famously wore his 2600 on stage using a long keyboard cable, creating a visual spectacle. Stevie Wonder used a Braille-labeled unit. Pete Townshend, Herbie Hancock, and Joe Zawinul were early adopters. Madonna's 'Borderline' (1984) and Michael Jackson's 'Thriller' (1983) featured 2600 bass sounds. Nine Inch Nails employed it on 'The Becoming.'
Cultural Impact
The ARP 2600 bridged experimental electronic music and popular accessibility. Its appearance in educational institutions trained a generation of synthesists. The instrument demonstrated that professional synthesis could be packaged in portable, relatively affordable formats without sacrificing capability.
Modern reissues by Korg (2020) and Behringer (2020), along with DIY kits like the TTSH, confirm its enduring relevance. Software emulations from Arturia and others keep its sound available to contemporary producers. The 2600 remains a benchmark against which other synthesizers are measured.
Market & Collectibility
Original ARP 2600 units command substantial prices based on condition and revision. 'Blue Meanie' and 'Gray Meanie' models are extraordinarily rare and valuable. Well-maintained 2600P units typically sell for $8,000-$15,000, with exceptional examples fetching more. The Korg FS reissue and Behringer variants offer alternatives at lower price points, though collectors prefer vintage units for their historical significance and distinctive component tolerances.
