TheYamaha YMF278orYMF278B, also known as theOPL4(OPL is anacronymforFM Operator Type-L), is asound chipthat incorporates bothFM synthesisandsample-based synthesis(often incorrectly called "wavetable synthesis") byYamaha. The FM part is essentially aYMF262(OPL3) block; thus, it is also backward-compatible with theYM3526(OPL) and theYM3812(OPL2). Like the OPL3, it can operate in one of four ways:
