Overview
The Yamaha CX5M, released in 1984, was a unique combination of MSX home computer and FM synthesizer. This innovative system integrated a Yamaha DX9-level FM sound engine with a complete MSX computer, allowing programming of FM sounds using software rather than the cryptic front-panel interfaces of standalone synthesizers.
The CX5M came with music software allowing FM voice programming, sequencing, and music education. The system represented an early attempt at computer-based synthesis control. The built-in SFG-01 FM sound module offered four-operator FM synthesis.
The CX5M is a rare collector's item today, representing an interesting intersection of home computing and music technology in the 1980s.
