The Waldorf Iridium was announced in June 2020 as a more compact and affordable alternative to Waldorf's flagship Quantum synthesizer. While the Quantum was released in 2018 as Waldorf's ultimate hybrid synthesizer featuring analog filters, the Iridium took the same powerful digital synthesis engine and repackaged it in a desktop module format with digital filters, offering greater polyphony at a more accessible price point.
The Iridium represents a continuation of Waldorf's legacy in wavetable synthesis that began with the Microwave series in 1989, which itself carried forward the PPG Wave legacy after Waldorf's founder Wolfgang Duren secured distribution rights for PPG. The name 'Iridium' continues Waldorf's tradition of naming products after elements, following the Quantum and preceding the later Iridium Core.
Development of the Iridium was led by Waldorf CTO Rolf Wohrmann and the engineering team in Remagen, Germany. The instrument was designed, constructed, and manufactured in Germany using industrial-grade components. The synth engine leverages technology from the Quantum, including the same five oscillator models: Wavetable (Waldorf's signature synthesis method), Waveform (virtual analog), Particle (sampling and granular sampling), Resonator (physical modeling), and Kernels (introduced in Quantum OS 2.0, allowing one oscillator to become up to six sub-oscillators with FM interlinking).
A major firmware milestone came with OS 2.0 for the Quantum, which introduced the Kernels synthesis model. This was subsequently made available for the Iridium as well, demonstrating Waldorf's commitment to maintaining feature parity between the two platforms. The shared architecture allows patches to be loaded interchangeably between Quantum and Iridium.
In March 2022, Waldorf expanded the Iridium line with the Iridium Keyboard, featuring a 49-key Fatar TP/8SK semi-weighted keyboard with polyphonic aftertouch. This brought the Iridium's synthesis capabilities to keyboard players who preferred an integrated instrument.
The Iridium has found adoption among film composers, electronic musicians, and sound designers who value its deep synthesis capabilities and compact form factor. Its ability to produce everything from classic Waldorf wavetable textures to complex granular soundscapes and physical modeled tones has made it a versatile tool for modern music production.
In 2023, Waldorf released the Iridium Core, a further compacted version of the instrument with 12-voice polyphony, demonstrating the scalability of the synthesis platform. Firmware updates have continued through 2025, with OS 3.3.0 adding MIDI 2.0 compatibility and other enhancements, showing Waldorf's ongoing commitment to the platform.
The Iridium remains in production as of 2025 and continues to receive regular firmware updates, maintaining its position as one of the most powerful desktop synthesizer modules available.
