The Waldorf Iridium Keyboard was announced on March 4, 2022, as a natural evolution of Waldorf Music's acclaimed Iridium desktop synthesizer. While the original Iridium (released in 2020) brought the powerful Quantum synthesis engine to a compact desktop format, musicians and producers consistently requested a keyboard version that would provide a more immediate, performance-oriented playing experience. Waldorf responded with the Iridium Keyboard, which represents a significant redesign centered around an innovative keybed collaboration.
The instrument's most distinctive feature is its implementation of FATAR's TP/8SK keyboard—the world's first semi-weighted polyphonic aftertouch keybed. Unlike traditional channel aftertouch that affects all notes equally, polyphonic aftertouch allows each key to transmit independent pressure data, enabling unprecedented expressive control where performers can apply different modulation to individual notes within a chord. This makes the Iridium Keyboard particularly suited to players seeking acoustic instrument-like nuance in electronic sound design.
Designed by legendary synthesizer designer Axel Hartmann (who also designed Waldorf's iconic Microwave from 1989), the Iridium Keyboard proudly continues the company's lineage as direct descendants of the legendary PPG Wave synthesizer series that defined wavetable synthesis in the 1980s. The Iridium Keyboard shares its synthesis architecture with Waldorf's Quantum flagship, enabling patch compatibility between the two instruments. However, while the Quantum uses analog filters and offers 8-voice polyphony, the Iridium Keyboard employs high-quality digital filters with true stereo signal paths and doubles the polyphony to 16 voices. This trade-off makes the Iridium Keyboard more versatile for complex, layered sounds while maintaining a more accessible price point (€2,899 at launch versus the Quantum's €4,336).
The instrument's five synthesis models per oscillator provide extraordinary sonic versatility: Wavetable synthesis (using single-cycle waveforms), Waveform (virtual analog), Particle (sampling and granular sampling), Resonator (for animated spectral manipulation), and Kernels (enabling up to 6 sub-oscillators with FM at audio rate).
