The Stam Audio SA-78-5 is a faithful recreation of the legendary UREI 1178 stereo compressor in a 500-series format, enhanced with critical improvements over the original design. The original 1178 lacked a slower attack time for bus duties and had no side-chain high-pass filter — the SA-78-5 addresses both. A super slow attack mode borrowed from the 1176AE (25ms) along with a 2:1 ratio has been added for drum bus and mix bus applications. A 3-position side-chain high-pass filter and true bypass switch handle modern bass-heavy productions. A dry/wet blend control enables parallel compression directly from the unit. Built with UK-made Carnhill output transformers, Vishay capacitors, Alpha potentiometers, and 1:1 knob recreations.
