Overview
The Roland JV-1080, released in 1994, was a 64-voice expander module based on Roland's acclaimed JV synthesis engine. This 1U rackmount module offered extensive PCM sounds, sophisticated effects, and expandability via PCMCIA cards. The JV-1080 became a staple of professional studios worldwide.
The instrument's 768 preset sounds covered orchestral, electronic, and world music categories. Eight expansion slots allowed adding SR-JV80 series cards with specialized sound libraries. The effects engine provided comprehensive processing including reverb, chorus, and COSM modeling.
The JV-1080 and its successors (JV-2080, XP-30) defined the sound of mid-1990s music production. These modules remain useful for their extensive sound libraries and reliable performance.
