Overview
The Korg Z1, released in 1997, brought the physical modeling synthesis of the monophonic Prophecy to 12-voice polyphony. This sophisticated synthesizer offered multiple synthesis models including analog, FM, acoustic modeling, and the distinctive physical modeling that allowed real-time manipulation of modeled instrument parameters.
The instrument featured dual arpeggiators, comprehensive effects, and the "Tube" controller for expressive sound manipulation. The 61-key velocity and aftertouch-sensitive keyboard supported sophisticated performance. The Z1's sounds—particularly its modeled acoustic instruments and evolving textures—were highly distinctive.
Korg manufactured the Z1 through the early 2000s. The instrument remains sought after for its unique synthesis capabilities and expressive potential. The Z1 represents the mature evolution of physical modeling synthesis before the technique migrated primarily to software.
