i3

TheKorg i3is a keyboard instrument introduced byKorgin 1993. Known as an "Interactive Music Workstation", the i3 broke new ground for Korg, and defined a new type of instrument - the professional auto-accompaniment workstation. Contrary to popular belief, it was not Korg's first foray into the realm of auto-accompaniment - it had a minor hit in 1985 with the SAS-20, a home keyboard with built-in speakers.

Overview

Korg's i3, released in 1993, was an interactive music workstation designed for automatic accompaniment and live performance. This 61-key instrument featured AI2 synthesis, a sophisticated arranger system, and a touchscreen interface for selecting styles and sounds. The i3 targeted hobbyist musicians and entertainment performers.

The instrument offered comprehensive auto-accompaniment with various musical styles, allowing solo performers to create full-band sounds. The sequencer and song recording capabilities supported composition. The i3's design prioritized ease of use over deep editing.

Korg produced several i-series workstations through the 1990s, competing with Yamaha's PSR and Roland's E-series arranger keyboards. The i3 represented Korg's approach to the consumer arranger market, distinct from their professional synthesizer lines.
