DS-8

TheKorg DS-8is a digital eight-voiceFM synthesizerreleased byKorgin 1987. Following an agreement withYamahafor access to its research and development facilities, it was designed using Yamaha components and constructed under a licensing agreement.It introduced an analog-style interface for controlling FM sounds and could play different patches on each of its eight voices, marking it as Korg's firstmulti-timbralMIDI synthesizer. Accompanying its launch was the Korg 707, a more portable version of the DS-8, lacking digital effects but equipped with strap pegs forkeytarperformance.

OverviewKorg's DS-8, released in 1986, was their first FM synthesizer, competing directly with Yamaha's DX7 using similar digital FM technology. This eight-voice polyphonic instrument offered digital operators and envelopes with Korg's distinctive programming interface. The DS-8 provided an alternative to Yamaha's dominance in the FM market.
The instrument featured velocity and aftertouch sensitivity, comprehensive MIDI implementation, and a built-in digital sequencer. The DS-8's sounds—while sharing FM characteristics with the DX7—offered different programming possibilities through Korg's interface design.
Korg manufactured the DS-8 alongside the related 707 module, both representing the company's FM era before returning to analog and sample-based synthesis. The DS-8 remains an interesting alternative to Yamaha FM instruments for collectors.
