The Ensoniq EPS (Ensoniq Performance Sampler) is a 13-bit sampling keyboard with variable sample rates from 6.25 kHz up to 52 kHz, offering up to 20-voice polyphony. Its 61-key keyboard provides velocity and polyphonic aftertouch, and it pairs digital multimode filters with an integrated 8-track sequencer, layering and keyboard splits, expandable sample memory, and an optional SCSI interface. Released in 1988, it was notable for its load-while-play architecture and powerful real-time performance features at an accessible price.

Overview

Ensoniq released the EPS (Ensoniq Performance Sampler) in 1988 as an affordable yet professional sampling keyboard. This 13-bit sampler offered 256KB expandable memory, comprehensive editing, and a 16-track sequencer. The EPS brought features previously available only in expensive systems to a broader market, establishing Ensoniq as a sampling innovator.

The instrument's polyphonic aftertouch keyboard supported expressive performance of sampled sounds. Ensoniq's proprietary compression algorithm allowed more efficient sample storage than competitors. The EPS supported SCSI expansion, enabling external storage and CD-ROM libraries.

Ensoniq followed the EPS with the enhanced EPS 16-Plus and eventually the ASR-10. The EPS line competed successfully against Akai and E-mu samplers through the early 1990s. The instrument's combination of affordability, features, and sound quality made it popular among electronic musicians and home studio owners.
